Many of us have questions about grocery shopping and handling food during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no data currently that food or food packaging is a risk factor for the transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Current evidence shows the biggest risk of transmission of COVID-19 is being around individuals who have symptoms (and to a lesser extent, infected but not showing symptoms.) Grocery stores should be following employee health policies and health department recommendations to keep these individuals home.

It is important to go to the grocery store only when needed, make a list and a plan to shop, don’t touch unnecessary items, and allow plenty of space between you and others in line.
